Swedish-Chilean artist/ designer Anton Alvarez’s Thread Wrapping Machine creates objects by binding the diverse components that go into making an object (legs, seat, back rest, etc.) with each other with thousands of meters of glue-coated thread. For an upcoming exhibition at Gallery Libby Sellers, Alvarez is investigating alternative possibilities with the machine.

“No screws, joinery or nails are utilised to link the diverse elements of the furniture – just the thread.” says Gallery Libby Sellers. “Through this ingenious technique, Alvarez is free of charge to join components such as wood, steel, or plastic whilst at the exact same time, generating decorative patterns formed by the different colours of the thread.”

In advance of the upcoming exhibition, Alvarez is investigating alternative possibilities with the machine – searching at the structural capabilities of thread-wrapped fabric and the decorative information made feasible by mixing the glue with paint. “I have full control more than the improvement of the machine,” says Alvarez, explaining that the set-up allows him to be independent from sector as nicely as from tradition. “I can freely experiment and create it according to what I find out are my requirements in this new craft.”
The solo exhibition of new works is due to open in the Berners Street gallery in early March 2014.
