A second floor apartment in an older developing in Montreal, Canada has been transformed into a modern dream duplex by MU Architecture Studio. The architects dreamed up the thought of ‘going up’ for the Mentana Residence to create a spacious 3 bedroom apartment with an in depth rooftop terrace.
The original red brick facade still exists, though the addition now gives an eye-catching juxtaposition of a timber box atop the building. Windows are screened with wooden louvres, contributing another layer of architectural splendor. The huge terrace is trimmed with flowering planters and greenery which is a fresh addition to the urban landscape.
Internally, the new duplex receives a focal point of a gorgeous glass and wood staircase. The light oak steps are flanked by a transparent rail which attributes steel rivets. So amazing is how each and every other riser boasts a constructed-in spotlight, making a functional masterpiece.
Divided into two floors, the 1st level is where the major living area can be discovered such as the kitchen and dining space, as well as a guest room. A shared space, residents can move about freely inside the open plan. The living area is rooted with a striking steel fireplace fitted with wood storage at the bottom and a modern ebony deer head on prime. Such a fresh take on a traditional wood-burning fireplace!
Polished concrete floors in deep charcoal showcase the pure white walls beautifully. The clean-lined kitchen is clad with high-gloss cabinetry, a gleaming marble-enveloped island and lustrous tiled backsplash. A trio of contemporary black and chrome stools add a striking sophistication to the white-drenched space.
The master suite and more casual family room reside on the second level, as does the expansive rooftop terrace. The recreational lounge is set with comfy, cozy sofas with patterned throw pillows. Lighting pendants of a variety of shapes preside more than this relaxed living region. Retractable glass doors open to the wonderful rooftop.
Actually an addition to the property, this open-air terrace is an enviable outside living zone with sleek, constructed-in modular sofas on platforms, a quaint teak dining set and (drumroll, please) a massive corner hot tub. The deck also has a separate entrance which directly–and conveniently–accesses the cabana bath with glazed walk-in shower.
The Mentana Residence is a prime instance of how one further story separates an ordinary apartment from an extraordinary a single.
